The Grande Sonate pathétique, usually called "Pathétique" for short, is one of the most famous of Beethoven's sonatas. The Wiener Urtext Edition presents this work in a single edition after the first volume of all sonatas for piano by the composer. The edition, based on the latest research results, is based on the first edition published in 1799 and the reprints of Beethoven's lifetime. The latter are particularly important as supplementary sources since neither the autograph nor the autograph related copies have been preserved. The careful editorial practice of these early prints became an exemplary model for the editorial design of the present edition. The notation is characterised by clarity, easy readability and practicable turning points.
