If music be the food of love, play on –

Will Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night hasn’t got it wrong. Here at Chimes Music we already love music: listening to it, playing it, reading it, talking about it (and yes we even like the smell of new music when it arrives!)

As Valentines Day approaches (you’ve only got until Wednesday) satisfy you, or your loved one’s desire for some new music to get stuck into. Whether you actually want to shower them in love songs, or wrap them up some music by their favourite composer we’re sure we have something for you. Or if you want to indulge in a bit of self-love as you avoid the bombardment of heart shaped cards, chocolates and cheap teddybears that festoon the shops at this time of year, what better time to get stuck into that tricky piece you’ve never quite dared to attempt?

We all have music that we associate with a specific time or person, sometimes it is heartbreaking, and other times it lifts you up so all you can do is smile. Quite why music touches our souls in the way that nothing else does I can’t answer. A few notes of Vaughan Williams’ The Lark Ascending and I am sat with my grandparents in their living room, even though it is years since we have all been sat together. Gary Numan’s Are ‘Friends’ Electric  takes me back to a chilly university flat during a power cut, where four great friends sat together listening to music via a stylophone speaker (it was only 2011!)  I’ve always meant to learn The Lark Ascending, partly because I simply adore the piece, and partly because to me it is not only music I love, but people I love.

So this week, rather than buying into the now, let’s face it, totally corporate day that is Valentine’s Day, buy into a bit of actual love. Play that piece that floods you with memories, or give someone the music from that musical you went to see when you were first dating, or the score from the concert you went to see. If all else fails listen to the music that fills you with what Valentine’s Day should be all about – love!
